<<Sad news on a former classmate>>

I like Facebook. I've moved around since I completed my undergraduate studies. I have called Toronto, Winnipeg, Rochester (Minnesota), and Markham home over the years. Facebook has allowed me to meet, reunite, and stay in touch with so many folks in one convenient place.

I learned this morning that a person I went to junior high and high school died in a car crash in Hinton, Alberta. It hits home when someone your age passes away out of the blue. So unexpected. So sad.

Dani and I were never in a class together in junior high. She was in the French immersion programme, and I was in the extended French one. We actually met in grade 9. We both were in the same science class with a teacher who had a number of requests. I remember one comment he had made on my report card that said, "Please sit down at my desk immediately when [I] walk into the classroom." I used to stop and briefly chat with a peer or two before class started. I didn't think I was being disruptive> I wasn't preventing the class from starting!

Anyway, Dani was always told to stop chewing gum or to "pipe down." She had long, red hair and had was content with life.

In grade 10, we had gym class together. I remember strategically playing water baseball (you'd bat the ball, dive in, and swim to first base in the pool). We chatted during this two-week unit. I remember how she thought it was awesome that I directed the ball into the corner of the pool closest to where I was standing.

Dani transferred to a different high school in Toronto I think for grade 11. We became Facebook friends at least a year ago when she found me. She became a real estate agent and got a degree in computer engineering.

Although we weren't exactly close pals, it saddens me that she is gone. The potential to know each other more is no longer there, but it was nice that we got the brief chance on Facebook. Rest in peace, Dani.
